Article is devoted to the famous Russian virologist - to Yury Vasilyevich Fedorov. The different parties of the biography of Yu.V. Fedorov, the main milestones of his scientific activity, pedagogical merits and uncommon human qualities are described.

The article is dedicated to the famous Russian virologist - Yury V. Fedorov. It describes different aspects of Fedorov’s biography, scientific and pedagogical work, human features.

On June 11, 2010 80 years since the birth of the famous domestic virologist Yury Vasilyevich Fedorov were executed. Already more than 12 years Yury Vasilyevich is not with us, but he is remembered and loved by colleagues, pupils, the family and friends.

For those who knew Yury Vasilyevich he was an example of the Scientist, Teacher and Person. Having become interested even during study in medical institute in microbiology and virology, he devoted all the scientific life to this field of medicine [6].

Yury Vasilyevich began the way to science in student's years in a microbiology circle where under the leadership of associate professor Nina Fiodorovna Surnina performed work on antitetanic serum. At department of microbiology of the Tomsk medical institute he became interested in science which became then business of all his life. There will pass many years, and Yury Vasilyevich will return on this department, will head it, will bring in its work a lot of new.

Since 1939 in Tomsk the active studying tick-borne encephalitis - a serious natural and focal infectious disease, widespread on began

territories of the Tomsk region. An epidemiological and virologic part of this long-term work was headed by S.P. Karpov [1]. Yu.V. Fedorov was one of favourite pupils of Sergey Petrovich and under his management performed the first serious scientific work which became a subject of the master's thesis (fig. 1).

Studying the tank of this infection in the nature was one of the interesting directions in development of a problem of tick-borne encephalitis. Including a role of wild birds and animals in pro-feeding of ixodic pincers, reservations of a virus in the nature and in transfer of a virus and the infected ticks on various distances. This work was very complex in performance as it was connected with catching of wild birds and animals in the centers of tick-borne encephalitis. Those years the hunting was big hobby of Yury Vasilyevich. He well knew and loved the wood, understood habits of wild animals and birds, was a marksman. All these qualities allowed to carry out a difficult task and to receive interesting and in many respects priority scientific data. For the first time in Siberia he established a role of wild birds in formation and maintenance of the natural centers of tick-borne encephalitis. Together with

N.I. Igolkin he proved that a gopher along with a chipmunk in the nature are the tank of a virus [4].

Following the results of this work in 1958 Yu.V. Fedorov defended the master's thesis "Wild birds - the tank of a virus of tick-borne encephalitis in the Tomsk center". Results of its researches were used in development of structure of the natural centers of tick-borne encephalitis in the conditions of Western Siberia, scientific substantiation of measures of their improvement and published in 25 scientific articles and 2 monographs: "Immunology of tick-borne encephalitis" and "Epidemiology and prevention of tick-borne encephalitis" (Tomsk, 1963, 1969, in soavt. with S.P. Karpov) [3].

Yu.V. Fedorov together with group of scientists (M.K. Tyush-nyakova, V.S. Erofeyev, N.I. Igolkin and Vershinina THAT.) the strains of a virus of tick-borne encephalitis allocated from pincers, birds, rodents were carefully studied and candidates for receiving medicines for treatment, prevention and diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis are chosen. Development and deployment in practice of such medicines became the next stage of scientific activity of Yu.V. Fedorov.

A number of diagnostic medicines were as a result received and improved: diagnostikum for RSK from a brain of white mice (Yu.V. Fedorov, L.A. Burenkova, Vee-dilina R.A., 1963), universal diagnostikum tick-borne encephalitis (Yu.V. Fedorov, L.E. Podoplekina, N.A. Shutova, 1991), an immunoenzymatic test system for diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis (Yu.V. Fedorov, L.E. Poe-doplekina, L.M. Laptakova, 1993) [3].

Many years Yu.V. Fedorov was engaged in studying medicines for treatment and the emergency prevention of tick-borne encephalitis: at first horse hyperimmune serum, then donor immunoglobulin. Under its management the rational scheme of immunization of animals - serum producers was developed, the efficiency of their operation depending on age, sex and breed is studied and various changes in an organism of animals at hyper immunization are revealed. On the basis of results of researches on studying reactivity of an organism at hyper immunization of animals vi-

fair-haired tick-borne encephalitis was improved a way of production of antiencephalitic serum for immunoglobulin production, the rivanol-spirtovy method of fractionation of immunoglobulin against tick-borne encephalitis was fulfilled and introduced in production [3].

The results of this lot of work were summed up in the doctoral dissertation of Yu.V. Fedorov "Reactivity of an organism and way of impact on it at hyper immunization of animals a virus of tick-borne encephalitis" (1966) and the monograph "Hyperimmune Serums" written in collaboration with S.P. Karpov, S.M. Preger and G.E. Sinelnikov (1976).

Vaccine remains the main medicine for prevention of tick-borne encephalitis in the centers of an infection. Yury Vasilyevich attached great value to improvement of the vaccine of tick-borne encephalitis produced for many years in NPO Virion. A number of priority works in this direction was executed under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov, A.V. Lyashenko's dissertations (1981), by E.G. Osipova (1984), I.V. of Kotykhov (1990), M.R. Karpova (1992) were defended.

Results of these works were: development of an original way of purification of the inactivated vaccine of tick-borne encephalitis and stabilization of its properties without decrease in immunogenicity; improvement of technology of various stages of receiving vaccine; introduction of a new production strain "205"; replaced conditions of cultivation of cages of a chicken embryo; replaced asbestos filters by fiber glass. All these changes considerably improved quality of vaccine. By E.G. Osipova under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov and R.G. So-lyanik in an experiment it was received essentially but -

vy medicine - dezintegrirovanny vaccine of tick-borne encephalitis. Priority works on studying uniformity and stability of a production strain of the 205th virus of tick-borne encephalitis were carried out [5].

The scientific interests of Yury Vasilyevich were not limited to studying a virus of tick-borne encephalitis. In 1965 he headed the laboratory of arbovirus organized under the Government decree. Under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov researches of biological properties and variability of viruses of horse encephalomyelitis - Venezuelan, east and western began. The collective of scientific different specialties was necessary for the solution of objectives. Here the big organizing talent of Yury Vasilyevich was shown. The staff of laboratory of genetics of viruses was involved to complex researches (the manager. laboratory - prof. V.D. Podoplekin), laboratories of culture of fabrics (the manager. laboratory - to. b. N of T.L. Miryutov.), the staff of department of biochemistry of the Tomsk medical institute (work was performed under the leadership of the prof. Fedorovoy T. S.).

As a result of these researches vaccinal strains of a virus of the Venezuelan encephalomyelitis were received, it is created the live, and then inactivated vaccines (N.L. Galakhar, 1968, 1971; N.L. Galakhar, V.D. Podoplekin, 1967; N.L. Galakhar, V.D. Podoplekin, 1969; R.G. Solyanik, V.D. Podoplekin, Yu.V. Fedorov, 1968, 1969, 1971; R.G. Solyanik, 1969, 1971). From pathogenic strains of a virus of east encephalomyelitis of horses were received "temperature" (L.M. Laptakova, V.D. Podoplekin, Yu. Fedorov. In, 1973) and "chemical" (R.G. Solyanik, Yu.V. Fedorov, 1972, 1973) mutants were executed researches on creation of the split vaccine (G.V. Anosova, 1986) [3].

The works devoted to detailed studying vaktsinalny process in an organism of the animals imparted by the received attenuirovanny vaccinal strains of viruses of the Venezuelan and east encephalomyelitis of horses (series of works of D.P. Dremov, Yu.N. Chernyavsky, V.D. Podoplekin) were of great interest. Under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov methods were developed

receiving specific serums against a virus of the Venezuelan encephalomyelitis (E.I. Sgibneva, 1968, 1969, 1971; E.I. Sgibneva, R.A. Vidilina, Yu.V. Fedorov, 1968; E.I. Sgibneva, Yu.V. Fedorov, 1967, 1969), virus of the western encephalomyelitis (A.S. Skobennikova, Yu.V. Fedorov, 1968, 1969, 1971) and virus of east encephalomyelitis of horses. From serum against a virus of east encephalomyelitis of horses the heterogeneous immunoglobulin protected by the copyright certificate (R.G. Solyanik, Yu.V. Fedorov, A.I. Lutoshkin, G.V. Anosova, 1976) was received [3].

Results of long-term researches of arbovirus were generalized in 4 doctor's and 11 master's theses and also in more than 100 scientific articles and the monograph Yu.V. Fedorova and R.G. Solyanik "Biological properties and variability of viruses of horse encephalomyelitis" (1977).

A number of the interesting works performed under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov was devoted to studying biological properties of arenavirus and their role in pathology of the person. Except a virus of the lymphocytic horiomeningit 2 exotic arenavirus - Takaribe and Amapari were in detail studied. It was for the first time allocated from the sick person and the Takaribe complex strain is in detail studied, 4 medicines are developed for diagnostics of arenavirus. On the instructions of MZ USSR a lot of work on creation of medicines for indication alpha and flavivi-rus was carried out. 4 polyvalent medicines were as a result developed for indication of these viruses in RNGA and in MFA [3].

The works performed under the leadership of Yu.V. Fedorov were always characterized by an integrated approach and the practical importance. The new problem at first was in detail developed theoretically, then opportunities to use the received results in practice were defined. Often the cycle of researches came to an end with receiving concrete medicines for diagnostics, treatment or prevention of an infectious disease. Many medicines then took root into production, some are still used in practical health care.

All scientific activity of Yu.V. Fedorov was inseparably linked with the Tomsk scientific research institute of vaccines and serums (NPO Virion subsequently). In 1954 right after the termination of institute it came to a postgraduate study on virology, then worked at the enterprise for production of bakteriyny and virus medicines of institute, holding consistently positions of the head of the laboratory, office, department. In 1965 it was transferred to a scientific part of institute where headed laboratory of arbovirus and remained her head till 1976. From 1967 to 1986 was the deputy director of the Tomsk NIIVS for scientific work. From 1986 to 1998 - the scientific consultant of scientific research institute of vaccines and serums of NPO Virion [4]. Tom-NIIVS was for Yury Vasilyevich not just the place of work, he was a part of his life. Being very strict and exacting head, he at the same time took all changes and events happening in institute very much to heart. Many employees considered Yu.V. Fedorov the teacher, with many him svyazyva-

At the end of 1986, remaining the scientific consultant of the Tomsk NIIVS, Yury Vasilyevich Fedorov headed department of microbiology of the Tomsk medical institute. At this department still he for the first time became interested in students in science which became then business of all his life, here he came at the peak of the scientific activity, with the huge, saved-up for years knowledge base and big plans.

Yury Vasilyevich applied the organizing experience to improvement of educational process. By Poe-doplekina to its offer a virologic part in teaching microbiology, together with G.E. Sinelnikov was considerably expanded (at that time the director of NPO Viri-on) at department the course "Bases of Medical Biotechnology" for students of medicobiological faculty was created.

Having wide experience of the speaker, Yury Vasilyevich prepared a course of lectures on virology and steadily read it to students of different faculties. His lectures always were interesting, concrete and comprised a lot of modern supplied and the information on stories of virology [4]. More than once he performed with lectures for doctors and teachers of such current problems of virology as HIV infection and tick-borne encephalitis.

In detail penetrating into teaching process, Yury Vasilyevich noted shortcomings of the educational literature which is growing old from year to year therefore it gave rise the idea of writing of the guide to microbiology for students based on the latest scientific data and corresponding to the modern program in microbiology. Yury Vasilyevich involved all staff of department in writing of the managements, and as a result in 1993 there was the 1st part, in a year - the 2nd part "The managements to a practical training on medical microbiology for students of medical schools", and in 1996 - the reference book for practical doctors and students "The main immunobiological medicines for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases of the person".

With Yu.V. Fedorov's arrival at department of microbiology also scientific work quickened. Here at the same time several graduate students studied, and with each of them Yury Vasilyevich was engaged individually. On everyone it created the diary where he carefully noted implementation of the plan of postgraduate work. He considered that training consists not only in performance of scientific qualification work, but also in training of the expert formed in the area. With each graduate student he was engaged according to the program of a candidate minimum in virology, strictly asking the set material.

The works devoted to a production strain of a virus of tick-borne encephalitis were the first postgraduate subjects under its management. They were executed together with laboratory of tick-borne encephalitis of scientific research institute of vaccines and serums which was directed by N.N. Kiselyova [5].

cytostatic medicines, questions of immunocorrection of immunodeficiency. This cycle of works was carried out together with department of a pathophysiology and Institute of pharmacology of the Tomsk scientific center. As a result of these researches 2 doctor's and 8 master's theses were defended.

Yu.V. Fedorov considered the Teacher S.P. Karpov, and not only in science, but also in life. Being itself the bright representative of the Siberian school of microbiologists and virologists, he continued business of the teacher, developed and expanded this school. Yu.V. Fedorov prepared 5 doctors and 32 candidates of science. Professor Yu.V. Fedorov and his pupils published 4 monographs, 340 scientific articles, 4 copyright certificates, 3 patents, 15 technological documentation on production of medicobiological medicines. The researchers and teachers who were working together with it or under its management, considering Yu.V. Fedorov the Teacher work in the different cities of the country, continue to develop science, to prepare new scientific and health care workforce.

Yu.V. Fedorov was very not indifferent person with an active civic stand. Having big organizing abilities, he very actively was engaged in public work. Within 12 years (1976-1987) he was the chairman of the Academic Council on award of academic degrees of the candidate of science in "virology" at the Tomsk NIIVS, the member of editorial councils of "The magazine of microbiology, epidemiology and immunobiology" and the "virusologii Voprosy" magazine; from 1976 to 1992 - the chairman of the Tomsk office of the All-Russian scientific and practical society of epidemiologists, microbiologists and parasitologists, and since 1980 and until the end of life - the board member of this society [4].

However Yu.V. Fedorov's characteristic will be incomplete without his outstanding human qualities. All who knew Yury Vasilyevich in life, were on friendly terms or worked with him, noted his honesty and decency. Yury Vasilyevich was very responsible person, was able to keep the word and demanded it from others. His close friends appreciated in it devotion, sincerity and kindness. In the friendly company it was cheerful, witty and Inta -

resny interlocutor.

Yury Vasilyevich grew up in wonderful family. His father is Vasily Fedorovich Fedorov was strong, strong-willed, honest and deeply decent person, outstanding sincere qualities were behind his severe appearance. Vasily Fedorovich came from the St. Petersburg workers. Having graduated from the Leningrad political and educational institute, he was a candidate of historical sciences, managed department of history of the CPSU at the Tomsk medical institute, was the rector of the Tomsk Pedagogical Institute. Mom is Maria Ivanovna was surprising kindness a person. In the big hospitable apartment there lived four generations of Fedorov. The kindest, hospitable Maria Ivanovna operated a household. Here were always glad to friends, loved and were able to receive guests. Who at least once Fedorov had on a visit, then often remembered the surprising atmosphere of this house and the most tasty food cooked by Maria Ivanovna.

Yury Vasilyevich very much loved the parents, and in his character lines and mothers, and the father intertwined. It was kind, sympathetic, very light person, on the other hand, - extremely organized, strong-willed, even rigid, especially when business concerned responsible work.

the Most part of life near Yury Vasilyevich there passed his wife - Tatyana Sergeyevna. For Yury Vasilyevich Tatyana Sergeyevna was not only the faithful wife, careful mother of their son - Alexander, but also the colleague (they were united by scientific interests), the interesting interlocutor, the loyal and devoted friend. During long joint life this remarkable couple carried by tender feelings to each other, kept cordial relations. Yury Vasilyevich was very good father and the grandfather, his authority in family was absolute, the family felt his love and answered him with the same feeling. Perhaps, under its influence the son also love -

my granddaughters chose medicine as the profession as Yury Vasilyevich made it at the time. So among remarkable medical dynasties of Tomsk Fedorov' dynasty appeared.

Unfortunately, Yury Vasilyevich Fedorov did not live up to the 80-year anniversary, but for his family, friends, pupils, colleagues this date - one more opportunity to remember this surprising person. And though Yury Vasilyevich is not with us today, he lives in the pupils, the son, granddaughters, and now and the great-grandson. Its business continues, there was its school, there live his descendants...
