The INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE In ELBLONGE

The "Elblong and the Kaliningrad Region in a Post-war Polish and Russian Historiography" conference took place on October 9 — 10, 2008 at the initiative of Elblongsky library of Ts. Norvid and her director Jacek Novinsky. The conference took place under the patronage of the president Elblonga Genrika Slonina, and her research supervisors and leaders became professor Andrzej Grot from the Pomor academy in Slup-sk and the dean of department of history of RGu of I. Kant W.I. Galtsov. Besides the Polish researchers from various scientific centers of the country, teachers of RGu of I. Kant participated in a forum.

From the Polish side at a conference reports of the Dr. Ezhi Kelbik "Kaliningrad/Konigsberg in the Polish scientific literature" (The center of scientific research, Mr. Olppjsh), the prof. Veslav Dlugokents-ky "Medieval Elblong in the Polish scientific literature" (Gdansk university), Dr. Elzhbeta Paprotskaya "Sources on a modern history in old archive of Konigsberg, the State archive in Gdansk and the PAN Gdansk library — research requirements" (Elblongsky library), Dr. Miroslav Golyon "Elblong after 1945 in scientific literature" (The university of N. Copernicus, Torun), the master Arkadiusz Velnyak "Problems of resettlement of inhabitants of Elblonga and area after 1945 in scientific literature" and others were heard.

The Polish researchers emphasized that two cities — Elblong and Kaliningrad — have much in common: they are based by knights of the Teutonic Order, their history long time developed in parallel, till 1945 they were under the German power, after war in them there was a full change of the population, both are seaports, regional education centers, etc. stated the offer to prepare through joint efforts the collective monograph about the history of two cities with the parallel texts written with use of a comparative method.

With interest reports of the Kaliningrad historians were listened. Professor G.V. Kretinin talked about the topic "Russian Historiography of History of East Prussia", especially in detail having analyzed literature on the period of Seven years' war and the Napoleonic wars. Associate professor A.A. Kuznetsov in the report "Historical and cultural heritage of Konigsberg in works of the Russian historians" tracked changes in studying historical and cultural monuments from historians, architects and art critics. His performance was followed by the presentation with display of views of Konigsberg, photos of monuments, architectural plans, books and portraits of researchers.

In the message of the prof. V.I. Galtsov it was noted "The main stages and features of study in Russia" the history of Konigsberg and the Kaliningrad region that up to the second half of the 1980th vol. the studying history of the region, first of all pre-war, in the Kaliningrad region actually was under a ban therefore had mainly informal character. The speaker considers the main problem in studying history of the region lack of traditions and scientific regional school and limited access to departmental archives and also to documents

the central archives in Moscow. Associate professor V.N. Maslov addressed a historiography of settling of the Kaliningrad region after war and considered the most typical stereotypes about the nature of migration processes existing in Soviet period noted their gradual overcoming in a Post-Soviet historiography.

Professor V.V. Sergeyev presented results of scientific research on the history of the Kaliningrad region for the last two decades in the systematized form, having noted apparent defect of attention to the social and political history of the area, the sphere of culture and sport, to the history of the certain cities and areas, to it sogshchokulturngm and to natsio-naljno-ethnic communities. In the report of associate professor M.A. Klemesheva "Cultural history of Kaliningrad in the Russian historiography" the main are allocated a stage in studying a problem: after the period of "concealment" in post-war time the collecting of materials begins with the 1960th vol., the istochnikovy base is created, systematic researches of cultural development of the region begin to be conducted later though still generalizing work on this subject did not appear. The report of professor Yu.V. Kos-tyashov "The Russian historiography about the place of Konigsberg in the Russian-German relations", read partially in Polish, emphasized the special role of the capital of East Prussia in the Russian education, economic and political connections of Russia and Germany and characterized a contribution of the Kaliningrad historians to development of this subject.

To all speakers numerous questions were set, discussion was followed by a brisk discussion. During summing up the decision to hold such meetings regularly and to publish reports of all conferees was made.

Three days spent to Elblonge left very favorable impression. The host was extremely hospitable. Residents of Kaliningrad got acquainted with city sights, in particular we visited cathedral — the most ancient monument of architecture, visited opening of an exhibition of the modern art. The excursion on library where we looked how there is a restoration and preservation of rare books was very interesting. But the trip to Malbork Castle, the residence of great masters of the German award where especially for us the night excursion with the Russian guide was organized was most of all remembered.

M.A. Klemesheva,

dots., RGU of I. Kant
