EVENING OF ST. GEORGE In RUSSIAN ABROAD LIBRARY FUND

On December 9 (on November 26 on old style) 2003 the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the Saint great martyr Georgi. This religious holiday once was a big event for people of military. In a prize system Russian

empires each award had a heavenly patron, and though in daily communication spoke about rewarding with "Anna", Stanislav and so forth, sacred protection of awards was vividly felt by our ancestors.

This day - day of Yury Zimny - in Russian Abroad Library fund (Moscow, Nizhnyaya Radishchevskaya St., 2) took place the evening dated for a holiday of the imperial Military Orden of the Saint Great martyr and Pobedonosts Georgi and devoted to history of this high award. Evening was prepared by forces of the sector of military history of the scientific and research department which is again organized in Library fund. His employees in the reports and messages offered audience the reflections about the place of an award of Saint George in the history and spiritual life of Russia.

E.P. Pudenkova ("Saint Georges the Victorious in culture and consciousness of the Russian people") stopped on Saint Georgi's life, his iconography and honoring of the great martyr-pobedonostsa in Russia. Really existing soldier from a noble family who renounced wealth and earthly goods for the sake of service to belief suffered tortures and persecution for the beliefs, but did not change belief and was executed. For firmness and courage it became especially esteemed and expensive to the Russian people, and its well-known image in the form of the rider plunging a spear of the dragon symbolizing the evil merged in consciousness of the people with epic legends on wonderful athletes.

A.A. Petrov ("An essay of history of an award of Saint George") told about the history of creation and development of an award in the Russian Empire. "Neither the high sort, nor former merits, nor received in battles of a wound are accepted in respect at an udostoyeniye for Saint George's award for military feats; the one who not only fulfilled the duty in everything according to the oath, honor and a debt receives it only, but over this marked himself in advantage and glory of the Russian weapon special difference", - the Statute of the award, throughout one and a half centuries remaining the most honourable and favourite in imperial army said. The whole system of awards including besides four degrees of an award also the St. George's Weapon and also a soldier's St George's Cross and a medal Of St. George was gradually created (both that, and another - also four degrees).

A.S. Kruchinin (""A white cross" in days of Civil howl -

ny") affected some symbolical communications connecting the imperial period of history of Russia to the White movement: among the first chevaliers of the order in Great war 1914 - 1917 there is future commander-in-chief of the Russian army baron P.N. Wrangel; the "white cross" at the time handed to the general Kalitin "The white general" M.D. Skobelev in 1914 was transferred by Kalitin to a brave Cossack captain to V.I. Volkov who in 1918 brought to power of the admiral A.V. Kolchak. Not idle time, according to him, there was a prize policy of leaders of the White movement: it is unlikely it was based how often it is considered, on "impossibility to award in war of Russians against Russians". In refusal of the commander-in-chief of VSYuR of the general A.I. Denikin of rewardings with an award, according to him, it is rather possible to see an example of the scrupulous relation - perhaps, and not realized up to the end, - to borders of own power: without handing awards (emperor's prerogative), he considered quite normal rewarding of the lower ranks with St George's Crosses and medals (a prerogative of the commander of the case according to the Statute of 1913).

A.V. Marynyak (""Traditions of St. George" of the Russian troops: regiments, banners, holidays...") stopped on history of collective awards Of St. George of imperial army (banners and standards, pipes and horns, buttonholes on uniforms of the lower ranks of the caused a stir parts, wide St.George's Ribbons to standards of the most nice regiments of the Russian cavalry - Nizhny Novgorod and Seversk the dragoon), told about the celebrations of a holiday Of St. George in the Russian Empire, about a story of the 13th dragoon Military Orden of a regiment, the battalion of protection Of St. George of the Rate and other parts connected with Saint George's award, about continuation of traditions Of St. George in exile (the last rewardings with St George's Crosses of the IV article took place in December, 1941 in the ranks of the Russian case).

The report was for a while interrupted: the audience honored memory of the last of the gentlemen Of St. George awarded on the home ground - the Honorary Chairman of the Russian all-military union, the ataman of Vseveli-kogo of army Donskoy who died on September 26, 2003 abroad, the chairman of the Tripartite alliance of Cossacks of Don, Kuban and Terek, professor Nikolay Vasilyevich Fedorov.

A subject of historical memory, the addressing of our contemporaries pages of military glory of Russia and its heavy years, about -

the speech of the amateur performer Victor Leonidov and demonstration of the documentary "Yudenich's Cross" (the director V.A. Fonarev, St.-Petersburg) devoted to the chevalier of the order of S. Giorgio IV, III and II article, the leader of the White movement in the northwest of Russia, to the general from an infanteriya N.N. Yudenich dolzhit.

After display of the movie the bishop Dionysius acted (Alferov; RPCZ (B)), noted value of the military duty and feat, often, especially in Russia adjoining to a feat spiritual. The idea of those changes introduced by it which happened in the Russian people for lifetime of an award of Saint George was very interesting: if earlier the St. George's day was perceived as an opportunity to dump from itself an excess burden, to facilitate the life, to provide prosperity, then in decades the day began to be associated on November 26 strongly with a feat - a feat military and spiritual because "there is more no that love if who will put the soul for the friend the"...

The thematic exhibition where were presented was developed in the hall of library fund: the stamps and bank notes with Saint George and Georgiyevskaya's image symbolics issued in the white South of Russia in 1919 - 1920; photos of a banner Of St. George of leyb-guard of the Finnish regiment in Russia at the front World War I and in exile (Gallipoli, 1921); the literature devoted to Saint George's image in the Russian church art on the seals, coins, in heraldry of Russia and the Russian Empire; books about history of an award of Saint George and rewardings with it which, one may say, had something in common and argued with speakers.

At evening there were representatives of the Russian national organizations and press organs.
