The "Defensive Works of Europe and East Prussia" conference was held on October 20 — 21, 2006 by the museum "Friedland Gates" together with laboratory of a technique of teaching and studying history of the region of department of history of RGu of I. Kant. It was opened by the Deputy Minister of Culture of the regional government A.G. Popov who emphasized need of collecting and studying information on historical and cultural objects in the territory of the area.

The head of department of information systems of the State historical and cultural memorial estate "Moscow Kremlin" A.V. Dremaylov gave the report "Moscow Kremlin: stages of architectural development — the 30th reconstruction". He showed the movie showing how on the basis of archaeological and written sources the visualization (recovery of shape) of a monument during various historical periods is carried out.

The chief of regional department of search of cultural values A.P. Ovsyanov told about fortification constructions of Europe: fortresses Boyen (Poland), Dyomitts (Germany), Karlskruna (Sweden), citadels Copenhagen, the Mazhino lines (France), having compared them to available in the Kaliningrad region, also came to a conclusion that our monuments are more various, are compactly located on a hiking trail, allow to track evolution of fortification constructions. These advantages need to be used.

The representative of the Netherlands I. Kaypers in the report "Use of historical defensive lines in tourism of the Netherlands" stated the concept "Nova of the Dutch line", representing forts and the flooded territories which are reconstructed and turn into ecological and recreational zones now.

One of heads of the restoration workshop "Heritage", Yu.A. Loginova made the message "Problems of restoration and preservation of a sculpture from sandstone on the example of restoration works in Kaliningrad in the open air". The local historian N.A. Cheburkin told about the first free strengthening of Konigsberg around Stein-dammsky gate by results of excavation of 2006 of the Sambiysky archaeological expedition. The employee of Institute of researches of cultural heritage in Vilnius L. Girlyavichyus gave the report "Improvement of a defensive system of Vilnius in the XVII—XVIII centuries". Stages of building of strengthenings and their modernization were allocated to them.

The deputy director of the Kaliningrad historical art museum A.A. Valuyev reported about results of archaeological works on the location of the Royal castle in Kaliningrad. As a result of excavation it was succeeded to specify arrangement of separate objects which will be added to the category of museum objects and equipped with observation decks for visitors. Scientific life

A.P. Bakhtin told ningradsky area about influence of a landscape on a construction of medal locks in Prussia, having noted a big role of water streams and lowlands and having allocated two types of locks — on islands and on capes. E.E. Shalaginova gave the report on a fort "Calm" in Pillau (Baltiysk) which is a complex of structures of the 19th century in the form of not close pentagon.

The exhibition which presented plans and schemes of defensive works of Konigsberg from funds of Secret state archive of Prussian cultural heritage (Germany) was prepared for opening of a conference in the museum "Friedland Gates". In the second day of a conference its participants visited excavation in the territory of the Royal castle, the Valdau lock (the settlement. Lower reach of the Guryev district), fort No. 1, Shaaken lock (settlement of Nekrasovo of the Guryev district) and Prussian ancient settlement Vetrovo (Zelenograd district).
