Drawing up bibliographies - absolutely special genre of scientific research. Their authors in many respects predetermine the subsequent research in the field and also set conditions for broadcast of the available scientific knowledge. The Naukovedchesky and methodological value of bibliographies is not fully realized by modern scientific community, but in the last decades the situation begins to change gradually. It is promoted also by that circumstance that the science history role promptly increases in structure and content of scientific knowledge. The scientist begins work with preliminary acquaintance to scientific literature, to the publications devoted to separate plots of the considered phenomenon. And here the main source are bibliographic indexes and grants. Similar literature helps not only to find for necessary material, but also to track research interest in the studied problem. Without the addressing the bibliography the researcher can spend for nothing time, allow duplication and as a result not reveal all range of the necessary sources. Development of the bibliography testifies to the high level of science in general. Bibliographic indexes are a peculiar reflection of nature of request of society for any given existing publications which are fixed in this handbook. The structure of the index, the nature of auxiliary keys to it, the system of records, style of summaries, all this represents an author's position of the originator bibliographer, his understanding of historical reality. Bibliographic editions a special type of sources for studying various questions connected with the organization of scientific activity, a problem of shots, a trend of development of the ideas, interpersonal interactions of scientists, consideration of historiographic plots.

It is also the reviewed edition prepared by the head of Laboratory of biographic researches of Interdepartmental scientific education center of history of science and technology of Institute of history, natural sciences and equipment of S.I. Vavilov RAS and Stavropol state university of M.E. Kolesnikova. nalny researchers of the North Caucasus. The author, understanding responsibility, does not apply for exhaustive completeness of the bibliography, noting that it is only the preliminary list of references. It, undoubtedly, will be complemented with new editions and those which for any reason were not included into this index. Creation of the full bibliography of a historiography and source study of the North Caucasus demands collective efforts of many experts: historians, archeologists, ethnographers and bibliographers who are engaged in studying region.

The bibliographic index "The historiography and a source study of history of the North Caucasus (the second half of XVIII - the first third of the 20th century) are obviously important first of all for historians as it can help at detection of books on the history of studying the region, various societies, institutions and activity of the certain researchers who are engaged in studying the region. It is interesting as well to the scientists who are engaged in Caucasus studies history. And here the value of bibliographic material is indisputable. Fedorov's words: "Only the bibliography can lead from popular, that is imaginary knowledge, to knowledge valid, based on direct sources which indication consists in the bibliography...". In historical science there are tectonic shifts which are expressed in activization of interest in the social history of regions, areas and the regions of Russia, shown in the last decade of the 20th century in connection with growth of consciousness of inhabitants of provinces and the growing love for the small homeland today. This interest forced historians to be engaged in development of istochnikovy base seriously. Representatives of the regional research centers got access to earlier inaccessible complexes of sources, appeared in the face of old - new historiographic schools. The main problem which they faced, - not readiness of istochnikovy base. Owing to this fact identification, the description, the publication, a bibliografirovaniye of archival and printing sources on the history of certain areas and regions, especially sources of universal contents were of particular importance. Such informative, universal source is the book, the newspaper, the magazine which contain the richest materials for studying all parties of social life of any given region, history of public consciousness, science, etc. It is important to consider also the fact that all works of the press are the facts of material culture - and as result of printing production, and as result of creativity of local authors.

Collected in the reviewed Bibliographic index of the book and printing materials, collections of documents are integrated thematically. The main subject - the history of studying the North Caucasus in the period of the second half of XVIII - the first third of the 20th century. The author-originator tried to unite in logically picked up and reasonable sections of the index under the general subject of work as the pre-revolutionary authors who are accurately fitting into the designated chronological period and later period and the present.

The index is multipurpose, to someone it will help to find the edition, necessary for work, to someone to understand process of studying the region in the past and the present, to see as the historiographic tradition of the North Caucasus arose, formed and developed, and in this context its source study function is undoubted. The index does not apply for exhaustive completeness of the bibliography, it is only the preliminary list of references. It, undoubtedly, will be complemented with new editions and those which for any reason were not included into this edition. Creation of fuller version demands collective efforts of experts: historians, archeologists, ethnographers and bibliographers who are engaged in studying North Caucasus.

Separately it is necessary to tell about the preface to the edition. Written by the author-originator of the index M.E. Kolesnikova, it represents independent scientific research, in is mute evolution of development of the local history bibliography of the North Caucasus which developed gradually in the course of identification, the description, account, systematization of historical literature and the published sources on local history is presented.
