G.A. Min: FROM the LIBRARIAN TO the COMMANDER LABE GUARD

SEMENOVSKY REGIMENT

© A.M. Panchenko, 2007

Novosibirsk highest military command college (military institute) of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation

The short biography and office activity of one of officers-librarians (1901 — 1903) of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment, subsequently the commander of the same regiment major general G.A. Minh is offered. Special attention in article is paid to the catalog of a regimental book meeting made and published by the manager of library colonel G.A. Minh.

In 1906 in "The Russian disabled person" the small, but very touching article obituary devoted to memory of the commander of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment major general Minh Georgy Aleksandrovich was published. "The late Georgy Aleksandrovich was a rare commander, - the author I. Malinovsky noted it. - In him, apparently from its short obituaries and from its orders which had the nature of heart-to-heart talks with a regiment everything connected to create the ideal commander of a regiment" [4]. The surname of the major general G.A. Minh is known only to a narrow circle of experts. Who is he Georgy Aleksandrovich Minh?

Georgy Aleksandrovich was born in family of the lieutenant general Alexander Egorovich Minh on December 9, 1855 in day of the great martyr Georgi in the suburb of St. Petersburg, near Okhta (G.A. Ming's father served at the well-known Okhta powder mill. - A.P.). At a baptism of the boy named a name of his Saint. He got an initial education in the St. Petersburg 1st classical gymnasium, having successfully finished it in 1874. Before it the road for further training at the university was open. But Georges The Victorious solves differently: arrives we volnoopredelyayushchitsya the 2nd category in leyb-guard the Semenovsky regiment. Subsequently Georgy Aleksandrovich very much was proud of the fact that he learned hard soldier's service from within. Having served all put time in a rank of the lower rank, Georgi Minh successfully maintains examination on the officer at the 2nd Konstantinovsky military college. On June 13, 1876 Georgy Aleksandrovich is made in ensigns of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment. Same year he was given assignment to a responsible position of the battalion aide-de-camp (the chief of staff. - A.P.).

The liberation Balkan war of 1877-1878 began. The ensign G.A. Min is directly involved in all fights (a crossing through Danube, a siege and capture of Plevna, fight at the Dolny Oak forest, transition through the Balkans, occupation

Sofia and Adrianople, etc. - A.P.) in which the valorous Semenovsky regiment of leyb-guard battled. As a part of the Plevna group of the prince Karl Rumynsky, and then the Western group of the general I.V. Gurko of G.A. Min participates in the most risky fighting tasks. By the end of the Russo-Turkish war he already orders a company. For fighting differences of G.A. Min it was awarded with the Orders of St. Anna of the 4th degree

with the inscription "For Bravery", for transition through the Balkans, and Saint Stanislav of the 3rd degree with swords and a bow for fight near Filippopol.

Peaceful life began. In 1884 Georgy Aleksandrovich is appointed to the position of the regimental aide-de-camp, and in 1887 he already ordered the 5th company and was appointed the member of regimental court. The extreme scrupulousness of G.A. Ming in questions of officer honor was well-known and respected in a circle of colleagues. In 1898 A. Min who is recently made in colonels (same year he short time fulfilled duties younger the headquarters officer. - A.P.), is urgently sent to the district of Samarkand in the order of its Imperial Highness of prince Alexander Petrovich Oldenburgsky for fight against plague epidemic. In 1899 the colonel G.A. Min is appointed the chairman of regimental court, and in 1903 unexpectedly was given appointment to the post of the commander 12th Grenadierial Astrakhan emperor Alexander III of a regiment. However in 1904 Georgy Aleksandrovich, to the delight of very many, receives the Semenovsky regiment of native leyb-guard in command, and in 1905 also the wing aide-de-camp of its Imperial Majesty is appointed. G.A. Min is most highly approved as the major general with appointment in suite of its Imperial Majesty. The Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree was the last award of G.A. Ming. On Sunday August 13, 1906 at 20:00 the general G.A. Min was killed by Z.V. Konoplyannikova, eserky. As showed the investigation, murder was preparing long ago and carefully. Having learned about the awful death of the commander, many officers-semenovtsy on the night of August 14 arrived to Peterhof to pay it the last honors [3].

Such is the short biography and an office way of G.A. Ming. Very few people know that Georgy Aleksandrovich still some time fulfilled duties of the librarian a native Semenovsky regiment of leyb-guard. His name as manager of a regimental book meeting costs in the same row with such famous officers-librarians of a regiment as: general aide-de-camp N.M. Sipyagin [7] (regimental aide-de-camp, the first regimental librarian, future military governor of Tiflis. -

A.P.), the regimental treasurer prince S.P. Trubetskoy (subsequently one of the famous figures of "Northern society" Decembrists, "the dictator on December 14", the head of a revolt at Senate Square. - A.P.), physicist V.V. Skobeltsin, etc.

Being at a position of the librarian, G.A. Min in 1903 made and published the catalog of officer library of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment consisting of two parts [9]. In the preface to the catalog the colonel G.A. Min notes that there passed more than twenty years from the date of the edition of the first

printing catalog [10]. During this time five officers managed regimental ofi-

tsersky library: a wing -

aide-de-camp captain

VA. Popov-2-y

(1876-1884), lieutenants M.S. von Bryn (1885-1889), L-A.I. von Egger (1890-1891), captain S.P. von Etter (1892-1899) and shtabs-captain Veshnyakov (19001901). The colonel G.A. Min summed up the results of activity of officer library during this time, gave positive evaluation of the work of the predecessors. Some librarians, as, for example, the lieutenant M.S. von Bryn, G.A. Min criticized. At him in a regimental book meeting "the order was partly broken". Though for it Georgy Aleksandrovich found justification - appointment of the lieutenant to a troublesome position of the aide-de-camp of a regiment. The new position did not allow the last to find sufficient time for management of officer library. The corporal Baransky "put" in the help to the librarian was negligent and inaccurate performed by the obligations for a book-depository. At reception of a regimental collection of books by the newly elected librarian, lieutenant L-and. I. von Egger, it turned out that "many valuable editions were found separated".

Especially warmly Georgy Aleksandrovich responded about a wing aide-de-camp the captain Vladimir Aleksandrovich of Popov-2-m who managed library of a regiment eight years, "being given with all the heart to this business, it brought it to perfection. At it the library differed in a perfect order" [11]. He the first published the printing catalog of library and made classified indexes of articles placed in all periodic Russian magazines coming to library, and military literature it allocated in the special index [17]. The V. A published by the captain. Popov-2-m the above-stated catalog and indexes were in many officer libraries of bodies of the Russian army [2].

Regular receipt of new books in library of a regiment caused the need for the edition of the addition to the catalog. Such addition was carried honestly out by the librarian the lieutenant

L-and.I. von Egger in 1891 [1]. Georgy Aleksandrovich Minh also noted that for a short time the lieutenant L-and.I. von Egger "put managements of a regimental book meeting much useful work".

As well as the captain of V. A. of Popov-2-y, eight years the shtabs-captain S.P. von Etter managed regimental library. At it all personal collection of books of the lieutenant general V.S. Xie-meki came to library of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment. The lieutenant general V.S. Semeka, old se-menovets, served to a regiment since 1834 up to its transfer to the General Staff, dying, he bequeathed the library to a native regiment. On April 17, 1897 the regiment received library of the lieutenant general V.S. Semeki in number of 1,228 volumes and periodicals almost in fifty years. Editions were placed in the bookcases which are specially acquired for this purpose. On one of them the bronze plate with an inscription was attached: "Library of the general aide-de-camp Vladimir Savich Semeki. Presented to a regiment in 1897". The Semekovsky library interested officers of a regiment. All wanted to get acquainted with its funds, but, unfortunately, it was transferred to a regiment without catalog and to find in it any composition presented certain difficulties. The order on leyb-guard to the Semenovsky regiment in December, 1896 appointed the special commission in structure: the chairman managing regimental educational team, the colonel A.S. Stetke-vich, and members: captain A.N. Semyonov, shtabs-captains Pronin, K.A. Timrot and S.P. von Et-ter. The task to check all book property of the presented library and to define what editions to withdraw from general use and what to leave was assigned to the commission.

With receiving in a gift of Semekovsky library there was a need for new, fuller systematic catalog even more sharply. For its drawing up the commission in structure was created: shtabs-captains Kavtaradze and Lode, lieutenant Veshnyakov. Within three years the commission worked, but results of its activity were unfavourable. The reason of such situation was the fact that for the help in reduction of book fund in an order and for drawing up the catalog the special worker was employed. To it, even before the end of all work, 600 rubles were paid, and it, having made the hand-written inventory to all books, stopped further work, having said what the rest can make only for an extra charge. Newly elected in 1900 the manager of library the shtabs-captain Veshnyakov as could struggled with such irresponsibility. Time went, the commission by itself broke up, and works on drawing up the catalog stopped. In the summer of 1900 the guilty person was attracted to judicial

responsibility. It was handed the court order on 500 rubles, but the defendant appeared without property and even without apartment. All books in library were rearranged in other cases, their numbering was changed, and officers of a regiment not only did not receive the new long-awaited catalog, but also lost an opportunity to use old. Hardly it was necessary to search for each book in cases. Substantial assistance to readers in search of the necessary books was provided by the private Rozhdestvensky "put" in the help to library.

On December 12, 1900 at a general meeting of officers of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment the resolution on foundation of the regimental museum was accepted. The museum commission is elected. The librarian and the shtabs-captain Veshnyakov who is at the same time managing the museum is elected as a member of the commission. The general meeting charged to it to select from huge amount of the material (pictures, portraits, various gifts, etc.) stored in library a part of invaluable relics for transfer to the regimental museum.

Having worked two years the librarian and the manager of the museum, the shtabs-captain Veshnyakov asked to exempt it from execution of these public duties. ("The provision on officer meetings in separate parts of troops" defined that for direct management of library and reading room annually between December 1 and 15 at a general meeting of a part (garrison) by a simple majority vote full members for a period of 1-2 years the officer - the manager of library and his deputy was elected. The elected librarian had to serve regarding not less than three years [8]. - A.P.).

Instead of it the colonel G.A. Min was elected the manager of a regimental collection of books. He fulfilled the librarian's duties up to appointment of a regiment as his commander of the 12th Grenadierial Astrakhan emperor Alexander III. It had to check all book fund of library again, to make mobile katalog1, to carry all books on departments, in a word, to carry out all preliminary work for printing

1 On each book from officer library the card was got the established sample. The author of the book (edition), its name, year of the edition and receipt, cost, quantity of volumes, pages, the room of department in library, a case, the shelf, the book was specified in it. There could be also additional information, for example: the publisher, the circulation, a state, a receipt form (a gift, it is brought it (is bought) instead of lost), etc. The mobile catalog was kept systematically, in process of receipt of editions in library. On each again arrived book the librarian got such card, signed it and established in the relevant department of library alphabetically. According to the mobile catalog it was possible to monitor easily moving of each edition to a book-depository. The catalog formed a basis for preparation of the next release.

"In view of a significant amount of books in foreign languages, the catalog is divided into two parts: the 1st part, books in Russian. the 2nd part, books in foreign languages. Both parts are divided into departments in which authors follow in alphabetical order owing to what numbers of books go not in a consecutive order. To give the chance more long time to use the published catalog, it is independent to whether books will move, it was recognized as necessary not to designate in the catalog of numbers of cases and shelves that, besides, considerably reduced the text and consequently, and reduced the price of printing. The librarian G.A. Min placed "The provision on library", "The librarian's duties" in again published systematic catalog and "The rules followed upon purchase of new books and maintaining the mobile catalog by it" (see applications).

Such is tragic destiny selflessly devoted to the Fatherland and a military duty of one of commanders of leyb-guard of the Semenovsky regiment — Georgy Aleksandrovich Minh. "Give us more than such commanders — the Russky Invalid newspaper wrote — and there will be terrible such inspired army not only no our internal sedition, but also the ghost of future collisions with the enemy external" [5]. Similar to G.A. Ming of generals and officers in the Russian army there were thousands.

Minh's memories

One more Russia the hero Vragov of Russia the victim fell,

What to a right debt and the oath the regiment Guards brought up.

Once again blood of the Fatherland of the son Rukoy of seditious was shed,

And the gratitude, honor and glory to It in sons of Russia was lit.

The hero is killed, serving Russia,

But the regiment Semenovsky lives And by an example of the commander More than once with sedition will go to fight.

Wreaths much on a grave You received, the struck Minh,

But all is more honest and more noticeable From them one was assigned.

On that wreath presented From the Russian devoted sons

Not many words are represented by

But with all the heart the going words.

To you there was an address For us, the died hero,

Here those few words value: "Are ready to follow you".

Eagles semenovets dashing, Minh's Blood to the sky cries out: For belief, Russia and for the Monarch in fight with sedition calls you.
